Learning a new band instrument is challenging at any age, but private instruction from Michael Wong will help you learn faster. Michael teaches a variety of instruments: clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, trombone, cornet, and recorder. If your youngster is in school band for the first time, he can help them master the basics quickly and become a leader of their section. Michael J. Wong attended the University of Massachusetts Lowell and graduated Cum Laude in 2007 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance. Since 2009, Michael has been teaching at the elementary level for the Worcester Public Schools and was voted “Teacher of the Year” at The Worcester Arts Magnet School (WAMS) in 2016, in part due to his patient demeanor with his instrumental students. His specialty instruments include Clarinet and Saxophone although he currently serves as Band Director to a successful group of students in grades 4 through 6. Along with teaching wind instruments at multiple schools, Michael also teaches general music classes to students in grades Pre-K through 6.
Michael was uniquely involved in a number of performing opportunities as a young high school student. He played in prestigious groups such as The New England Conservatory Youth Symphony Orchestra, Senior Central District Festival Band and Orchestra, Massachusetts All-State Concert Band and the All-Eastern Concert Band, and subbed for the Thayer Symphony Orchestra.
Upon attending UMASS Lowell, Michael consistently participated as Concert Master in the following collegiate music ensembles: Honors Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Chamber Orchestra and multiple chamber groups.
Michael’s post collegiate performing experience includes acting as a pit orchestra woodwind player in various musicals such as Cabaret (2008), Barnum (2008) and Peter Pan (2009). He has taken part in Leominster’s annual 4th of July Event, “Starburst”, and he also plays with several Community Bands in the local area.
